A story from Greenhouse

We can find some legal resolutions of agricultural workers' accommodations granted by the Portuguese government, but as an agriculture worker in Portuguese commercial agriculture farms, I have critical experience managing a bed space in the Alentejo. The workers' residences are concentrated in Odemira, Sao Teotonio, and Zambujiera because there are several large raspberry companies nearby, and the companies provide transportation to the workers from these locations.

For a long time, I couldn't even find a bed, and the workers' hostels at the supplier companies were filthy and lacking in privacy. I was assigned to the top bunk with three other people. I pulled down the mattress and spent some nights on the floor. My request for accommodation management was met with hostility from the agencymen. I looked for a place to stay or a bed to share with no more than two other people.

Looking around, I discovered that some of the hostels and rooms are worse than what the agency provided. Now I am using the bed space of a friend who is visiting Nepal. I have to leave when he returns to his apartment.

In my experience, there are some factors that contribute to the crisis of the living space: (i) the companies are not responsible for the workers' accommodations. ii) maximum influx of immigrants in these specific locations.iii) The house is not created by a proposal to rent out space.iv). missunderstanding of local people, i.e., immigrante porco, moito barulo, etc.

The next day for agricultural workers begins in the evening before sleep; we must prepare our food (breakfast and lunch), sleep on time, and so on.

When we enter the work place, the work must go on even though it is raining outside or very hot inside the tunnels. Workers would be in charge of protecting and maintaining the product's quality and hygiene.

Facilities and the payment system vary from company to company. Some of them have more facilities, like breaks, working hours, drinking water, a social zone for lunch and breakfast, toilets, and a bonus pay system, according to the average.

Generally, Asian (Nepali) agriculture workers remain behind and are exploited because of language. The main barrier to two-way communication, understanding supervisory instructions, reading company roles and regulations, and so on is Portuguese.
