Folklore: A Tale of Ojerengba
Kishor Subba Limbu
Once upon a time, there was violence from Ojerengba (a cannibal monster) in Danda (a hill) village. Ojerengba was like a long-haired girl with long hair and a big milk jug. The head of the village society decided to give one person each day to the Ojerenba to minimise the disaster. In the evening, the Ojerenga would come to the village, saying "Ojerengba Loldaya" (some called it "Ojerengba Tayanau" in Yakha). The Ojerengba used to go to the victim's house after the village chief told him who would go with him this night.
One evening, a big hunter from Arun Pari (another side of the Arun river) shot the Badenl (the jungle pig). The injured Badenl crossed the river. The hunter kept chasing the Badenl until the evening. It was night when he reached Danda village. The hunter asked for evening accommodations in the house he had reached. "It would be their pleasure to welcome the guest in the evening," the house lady explained, "but there is a problem; we are only mother and daughter at home." There is Ojerengba's violence in the village, which takes one person each night. Today is our turn, so Ojerengba will take one of us to dinner tonight. "So, respected guest, please find the accommodation somewhere else in a safe place."
The hunters asked the subject in detail. How did Ojerengba come? How does Ojerengba appear? The house lady explains the details of Ojerengba: "It looks like a girl with long hair and big breasts." It comes in the evening to the appointed house, calling Ojerengba Londayo (Ojerengba is coming). Then the hunter shares his plan with the house lady. You two finish your dinner and go to sleep upstairs without making any noise. I sleep next to this door. I'll see how much, how quickly, and what happens at night.I'll keep setting up my bow and arrow through the hole in the door.
According to the hunter, the mother and daughter finished their dinner and went upstairs. The hunter is placed in a bed by the door.At night, the bear-like animal came out in the courtyard, saying, "Ojerengba Loldaya." "Ojerengba Loldaya". The hunter set his bow and arrow from the inside. Generally, people came out as soon as they heard that Ojerengba had come. They would open the door and get ready. But the door was not opened today. Ojerengba got angry and started digging in the door. At the right time, the hunter, who had prepared a bow from the inside, stretched the bow from the lock hole of the door and hit it in the chest, and Ojerengba fell down in the courtyard.
The hunter investigated what made people human. The hunter got afraid and killed a human. If he were killed by a human, the village society would kill him. At that time, life versus life was justice. Then the hunter fled at night from the house where he had stayed for that night. The hunter hid in a Sisnu bush near the Achar gau (Newar village) under the main road.
In the village, the villagers were celebrating their happiness at killing such a cannibal monster, and they searched for the great hunter who guarded the village. Villagers searched all around, but they couldn't find him. At last, the hunter was found under the main road in a Sisnu bush, hiding like a chicken. They paid respect and honour to him for killing such a cannibal monster, and the house lady offered him to marry her daughter. Then the hunter started his family and lived in the village.
