Prof. Lionel Caplan (PhD) was born in Montreal, Canada in November 1931 and went to school in the same city. He then did a BCom degree at McGill University,  graduating in 1952. After a spell in the commercial world, he returned to academic life and completed MPhil and PhD degrees in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He joined the SOAS faculty in 1965 and taught there until retiring in 1997. 

This KURAGRAPHYकुराग्राफी   talk is based on his doctoral fieldwork during 1964-65 in Ilam, Nepal. He examined the relations between a marginalised ‘tribal’ community – the Limbu - and the Hindu high castes, mainly Brahmans, who had entered their territory and taken control of their main resource, Kipat land. Arising from this research was the book Land and Social Change in East Nepal: a study of Hindu-tribal relations (Routledge & Kegan Paul, University of California Press, 1970). A second edition was published by Himal Books in 2000. 

His other publications on Nepal are Administration and Politics in a Nepalese Town: the study of a district capital and its environs (Oxford University Press, 1975), and Warrior Gentlemen: ‘Gurkhas’ in the Western imagination (Berghahn Books, 1995).

He has also conducted research and published on the Indian Christian community: Class and Culture in Urban India: fundamentalism in a Christian community (Clarendon Press, 1987), as well as on Anglo-Indians in an urban centre: Children of Colonialism: Anglo-Indians in a postcolonial world (Berg, 2001).
