A Day Diary of a Migrant Agricultural Worker in the Algarve, Portugal

Day 151
18th December 2021
Algarve

When I awoke at 7.10 a.m., it was too late to prepare myself to leave for work, which began at 7.30 a.m. dress up, take the toothpaste and brush, and run for the bathroom. It was already 7.22 a.m. when I awoke. I kept the toothpaste and brush in my pocket and then walked fast to the morning assembly.

Generally, it takes 5-7 minutes to walk, and when I was there, the assembly was already finished and workers were leaving for their appointed workplaces. I asked the supervisor.
"Where is my duty today?"
"Ummm... you have no work today because your name is on the leave list," the supervisor told me after checking the name list.
"How is it possible?" Because yesterday was my day off and I don't have any pre-information about today's schedule, supervisors should inform me in time if there is a change in the regular schedule. "If I have a leave, why should I have to wake up in the early morning on a cold morning?" I asked the supervisor.
"I will ask the senior supervisor, then you can join the work." He went to ask and told me to come with him to his group. I awoke at 7.10 a.m.; it was too late to prepare myself to leave for work, which began at 7.30 a.m. Dress up, take the toothpaste and brush, and run for the bathroom. It was already 7.22 a.m. when I awoke. I kept the toothpaste and brush in my pocket and then walked fast to the morning assembly.

There are 13 workers with a supervisor, and we have to clear the fodder in the raspberry field since the last two weeks we have been doing the raspberry plant's cutting and storage of the stems for the next season. The supervisor made two groups to work; I was appointed for the collecting of BAJU (the bucket where the raspberry plant has to be planted) with non-qualified plants that were left on the field while storing the plant. We did this job up to the first tea break at 10 a.m.

After 20 minutes of tea break, the supervisor changed our duty, and I was appointed to fodder collection on the line with the KHUDKILA (a tool with four nails to collect the fodder). The work continued up to 13.20 p.m. 13.20 It is a 40-minute lunch break, but today we don't have work after lunch.

When I arrived at the container, I decided that if we didn't have any work after lunch, it would be better to take a bath than eat.On a normal day, we have to run for the hot water in the bathroom, but today there was enough hot water because workers have different tasks and our group was the first to return to the container.

I'm having rice with chicken curry from last night (this is how we normally cook curry in the evening for tomorrow lunch) and rice (it used to cook in the morning while we had tea).

After having lunch, I have to wash some clothes, but there is no facility for the washing machine. There was a coin-operated washing machine previously, but it has been out of service for more than a month due to an electrical problem.I have done handwashing in the bathroom.

After that, I sat on the bed and tried to use the internet; the company-provided wifi internet is poor, and there is almost no internet during the day and evening; it works better late at night and early in the morning.Normally, I do check my emails and messages at that time.

I wanted to read some news that was recommended by my friend about migrant agricultural workers. She shared and explained to me last night that some GNR policemen are accused of in the 33 cases filed in court by migrant victims; they were from South Asia (Nepali, Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi); the news published by CNN journalists; and the minimum requirement of the living conditions in the labour camp container according to the law of 2019.She has provided me with the news link, and I wanted to know more about that, but the internet was not supporting me with its poor network. Then I fell asleep.

I wake up at 6.30 pm, then I start cooking. While I was in the kitchen, some Bangladeshi friends came and started cooking their dishes. They offer me the chance to test their food: chapati (a kind of rice bread) with fish pickle.

Today I prepared DAL-VAT (rice with lentils) with the curry of the chicken pods. Normally, we prepare curry and lentils for tomorrow morning's lunch, too.

We played cards for 2 hours after dinner until it was time to go to bed and wrote the day's diary.
Have a good night.
